Sizing a Ringer Tee by Its Bands

FIT

The contrast bands make it easy to see whether a tee fits where it should.

Contrast trim is an honest guide to fit, which helps when the tee has to keep up with you on the rink. On a plain tee, a seam that sits an inch too low disappears into the fabric. On a ringer, every band is outlined in a second color, so you can see exactly where the neck, the shoulders, and the sleeves land. Use that to your advantage when you try one on.

Where the Neck Band Should Sit

The neck band should rest flat around the base of the neck, just above the collarbones, without pressing on the throat. If it lifts away and leaves a gap at the back, the tee is too big through the shoulders. If it pulls tight when you turn your head, size up.

Where the Shoulder Seam Lands

Find the bony point at the outer edge of your shoulder. On a ringer, the shoulder seam should sit right on it or a finger's width past it. On a baby tee it should sit right on it. A seam that drops well down the upper arm makes the sleeve band hang too low and the whole tee look borrowed.

Where the Sleeve Band Ends

On a ringer, the sleeve band usually lands about halfway down the upper arm. It should close around the arm without gripping. Lift your arms overhead: if the band digs in or rides up into the armpit, the sleeve is too narrow for you. On a baby tee the sleeve is shorter and closer by design, but it still should not leave a mark on the skin.

Length on a Baby Tee

A baby tee is cut to meet the waistband of high-rise pants or a skirt. Try it on with the bottoms you plan to wear. The hem should touch the top of the waistband or stop just short of it when you stand, and it should still meet the waistband when you lean forward into a skater's crouch. If it rides well above the waistband when you raise your arms, go up a size.

When You Are Between Sizes

For a ringer, the smaller size keeps the neat seventies line and the larger size gives an easy, slightly boxy fit, so it comes down to how you want it to look. For a baby tee, choose the larger size, since the close cut already sits near the body and a little extra length keeps the hem where it belongs.
